Problems within IFB churches

The Independent Fundamental Baptist movement is a small group within true Christianity, but it’s devastating and often times damaging effects are large. Although they claim to be solely bible based and many are, their main focus often times is Pharisaical and legalistic to the point of hurting many new believers, turning unbelievers off, or just hurting the name of Christ as a whole.A good example of this can be found on Pastor Andrew Teesdale’s of Everett Washington ... Fighting Fundamental Forum and his Baptist Board forum. It seems the only people who can control these forums, are those who are related or friends in some way or form to Andrew Teesdale.

If an outsider comes in who actually knows the bible or takes a stand on the IFB legalistic ways and how they have hurt many under these types of pastors leadership, they are immediately attacked and called names and basically ridiculed off the board if not banned. Not for name calling or attacking the messenger, but for their own views on doctrines other than their own. That can be fine and dandy if it were not for the fact that the ones who attack (often times pastors themselves) are FOUL MOUTHED, slanderous, lie about the poster, personally attack the messenger and not the message, (because they know they cannot) sarcastic, or just don’t know the bible....bottom line is the forum owner plays favorites while innocent well meaning good Christians get hurt....much like what goes on within their churches. Their tactics in the church and off are the same.

Some of their legalistic teachings are King James Only bibles, women MUST wear dresses or they are not godly, no mixed swimming, no dancing, no drinking, women must not have their own opinions, that is the husbands job, or men in general. Basically the outward determines your right standing with God not your heart, and your own walk with him. With so much focus on the outward and not the heart (out of the heart spews ones true self and is evident on these forums) it is no wonder so few attend IFB churches.

Comment on You're Going to Hell by Katy

Right. Sinners won’t go to hell because of what they do, but because of why they do it. If certain actions sent us to hell, no one could be saved, because even after salvation, no one is perfect. But yes, it is because we are “sinful to the core” that God is justified in condemning us to an eternity spent without him. I, for one, am extremely thankful that God has provided the only way to escape the punishment I so richly deserve.

Comment on Dispensationalism's Most Egregious Error by Craig Hatcher

Greetings,

Thank you for your post concerning dispensationalism. I have long had difficulty with this theological viewpoint. One observation I have is that Scofield dispensationalism may well be the Judaizing that Paul condemns in Galatians. Ultimately, it is a rejection of Christology with a return back to the Temple sacrificial system in a future kingdom. Why? Isn’t the sacrifice of Christ sufficient for all time? This dualistic soteriology is simply not Biblically supportable.

Comment on I am/am not/am a Fundamentalist by Katy

Just in a drive-by sort of way, I would like to add my two cents worth. I would agree that a lot of Fundamentalists take issues that by rights belong under the “standards” heading and try to put them under the “doctrine/theology” heading. For a dumb example (and referencing one of the items on Matt’s list), women wearing pants. I wore pants all summer to a church where I was probably the only female wearing pants. Someone told me I was being rebellious, and another friend told me jokingly that I was a “heathen.” I would just like to know, since when did dress code, or music (although music can be a greater indicator of where your heart is than what you wear), or any other thing not referenced in Scripture come to be equated with holiness? I would agree with my brothers that that is one of Fundamentalisms glaring faults...the tendency to judge by outward appearance rather than inward integrity. However, I do understand that while God judges the heart, man does judge the outward appearance/actions, and while that understanding should not be my sole focus in life, it is important. Does that make sense? Although we are, and should be, striving to become more like Christ every day (and thus look on the heart), we are still human. We look on the outside. Thus, our outside needs to show as much as is possible what is inside our heart.

One last example: I have do not hold with a lot of Maranatha’s (where I attend college) rules and standards. In fact, I spent the week before school started somewhat blatantly breaking a number of them. But for the most part I understand why they are there and do my best to keep them when I am under Maranatha’s authority. Does keeping the rules or breaking them make me any better or worse of a Christian? For the most part, not really. Wearing pants to church does not make me a “heathen,” no more than wearing a skirt and hose makes me “Christlike.” What I’m trying to say is, that some Fundamentalists, like me, don’t do the things we do because we believe it makes us more Christlike, although certain things can help, but because, well, we want to. I know some people can’t understand that I willingly choose not to listen to CCM or smoke or drink, even though I might not be convinced that those things are “wrong” or “evil.” I just choose not to do them. Does that make me better than someone who does? Not really. Does it make me worse? For sure no.

I don’t know if those two paragraphs were really related; maybe I’ll go into it more in my own blog. I just thought they were both relevant.

It’s the combination of the sweet and the bacon. Not just salty, but actual bacon. I don’t think bacon bits would work quite the same, especially since they’re much smaller and don’t really have that bacon flavor.

I like the way it’s primarily sweet, but then you hit the bacon chunks. So it’s not a blended flavor, but two distinct flavors that stand on their own. The fact that the bacon chunks are bit chewy enhances the experience by making that bacon flavor linger a bit.

Wait a minute—there’s really nothing wrong with Dispensationalism, is there? I always thought all good Christians were Dispensationalists.

Just kidding.

And I agree. The whole return-to-sacrifices idea was something that struck me as very wrong, very early on in my departure from Dispensationalism—and largely because of Hebrews 10. Good post.

Comment on Dispensationalism's Most Egregious Error by nathan

I agree. The main problem with dispensationalism is that it stomps all over God’s grace and indeed the whole of His plan for His people. The Church is not a historical side note.

Since you bring up dispensationalism, I’ll mention what we reviewed in family Bible study last night. John 8:31 ff. Simply, Jesus informs “Jews who had believed Him” that Abraham couldn’t be their father because they were seeking to kill Him, something Abraham would’ve had no part of. It was a little tricky at first because why would Jews who believed Him be trying to kill Him? I think Jesus was talking at first to those who believed and others who hated Him overheard, so the conversation shifted to them all.

Anyway, my point is that Jesus clearly stated that the Jews were not children of Abraham through physical inheritance, but that only those who “do the deeds of Abraham” are Abraham’s spiritual children. The deeds of Abraham would be belief in Jesus, as vs 56. alludes to.

What’s also interesting is that Jesus told these people who were so nationalistic as to reject Christ - these people that mistakenly thought God’s promise was to physical descendants of Abraham - that they do have a father, but it’s not Abraham and it’s not God. It’s the devil. Now, He made this accusation because of the murder they intended in their hearts, but it was their loyalty to this false doctrine that was driving their intentions and is what Jesus was ultimately condemning. He called them “liars” for holding to that doctrine (vs 54-56).

Now I’m not implying anything about modern day dispensationalists that make the exact same theological error, but I think it’s important to note that both Jesus and Paul and whoever wrote Hebrews all taught the complete opposite. At what point is it another Gospel if not the point that drew these kind of accusations from Christ Himself? I’m just sayin’…

The API is probably trying to interpret those as xml tags. At this point, I’m not sure how to tell the script to escape those.

An extraordinary job. I’m now using this Quicksilver action to send notes to my BackPack pages. Unfortunately, I usually add the title of the note as <h1>Note</h1></pre> and this causes the title not to be properly displayed. Could you please fix this?

Comment on Confession by Katy

I agree with most of what I read here (sorry, only skimmed it). I know that I have a struggle with a particular sin, and I continually ask myself, “why did I do that? What’s wrong with me?” I guess the answer is pretty obvious, though...What isn’t wrong with me? I’m a sinner, although one saved by grace, and my sin nature still loves to take over. The only reason I am able to live a life even relatively pleasing to God is through his own power and strength.

Thanks, Mott!!! I needed that reminder.

You should be able to view source and search for “Main.” You should be able to find the sidebar link that points to the main page, and contains the page ID for that page.

Thank you! love the scripts. I also use the following for posting notes to pages:

(excerpt from script)

backpackit.com/ws/page/” & backpackPage & “/notes/create

Does anybody have any idea how i can modify this to post notes to my homepage? Everything i’ve tried has failed.

Thanks!

Comment on Christians and Politics by nathan

I agree wholeheartedly with what you’ve got here.

In relation to taking care of the poor and whether or not government can/should be used to supplement the Church in this regard, consider this: is it just the catholic Church’s responsibility or is it an individual believer’s responsibility, too? I believe that we individually as Christians have a responsibility to care for the poor, and by extension then to use our voting decision in that regard (all things considered, of course). Since we cannot vote as the collective Church, this becomes almost entirely a personal, individual decision.

The other part would be what’s the alternative? Vote to not help the poor (in the case of this one issue)?
